tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) is a colorless, transparent liquid and a commonly used alkyl hydrogen organic peroxide. It possesses strong oxidizing properties and is often found in aqueous solution. It is widely used as a polymerization initiator, an unsaturated polyester crosslinking agent, a mild oxidizing agent in organic synthesis (such as epoxidation and sulfur/nitrogen/phosphorus heteroatom oxidation), and as an additive in paints and diesel fuels. TBHP is highly flammable and corrosive; therefore, safety precautions must be taken.
Excellent initiation properties: As a commonly used organic peroxide, it effectively initiates emulsion polymerization, aqueous polymerization, graft polymerization, and the curing reactions of unsaturated resins.
Superior to traditional initiators: In many polymerization reactions, TBHP outperforms traditional initiators such as persulfate, cumene peroxide (BPO), and benzoyl peroxide.
Wide range of chemical reactivity:
Oxidizing agent: Used as a strong oxidizing agent in organic synthesis, such as the oxidation of alcohols.
Free radical source: Can serve as a starting source for free radical reactions, such as the epoxidation of olefins (in combination with metal catalysts).
High-value applications: It has significant value in the synthesis of pharmaceutical and pesticide intermediates, contributing to the construction of complex molecules.
Wide applicability: Suitable for polymerization in different media, such as aqueous polymerization and emulsion polymerization.
Mild reaction conditions: Compared to other strong oxidants or initiators, its reactivity is controllable, which is beneficial for the synthesis of fine chemicals under mild conditions.

Polymer Industry: Used as an initiator in emulsion polymerization, aqueous phase polymerization, curing, and graft polymerization, exhibiting high efficiency and superior performance compared to some traditional initiators.
Polymer Materials: Used for medium- and high-temperature crosslinking of unsaturated polyesters, improving material properties.
Rubber and Plastics Industry: Serves as a vulcanizing agent for natural raw rubber.
Fuel Additives: Improves the cetane number of diesel fuel.
Organic Synthesis: Oxidation Reactions: Used for epoxidation of olefins (such as Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation), hydride oxidation, and oxidation of sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds.
Synthetic Raw Materials: An important raw material for the synthesis of other organic peroxides.
Paints and Coatings: Participates in relevant reactions in the paint industry.
Tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) is a reactive organic peroxide whose peroxy bonds readily break to generate free radicals, thereby initiating polymerization reactions or participating in redox reactions.
TBHP is a commonly used initiator for free radical reactions, characterized by good thermal stability, safety, and ease of control, even at 50°C.
TBHP is also widely used as a polymerization initiator for styrene, acrylic acid, and methacrylic acid.
TBHP is a vulcanizing agent for natural rubber. It can be used to improve the cetane number of diesel fuel. It is also a very important organic synthesis intermediate, exhibiting exceptional selectivity and high yield in epoxidation, making it a crucial oxidizing agent.
